Ratan Tata invests undisclosed amount in Singapore-based big data firm Crayon Data

Big Data is here for eternity, and that what made the business tycoon Ratan Tata invest undisclosed amount in a Singapore-based big data firm known as Crayon Data. With this investment the company has joined the league of many startups based by the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons lately.

 

Did you know this personal investment made by Ratan Tata came just three months after he took on Jungle Ventures as a senior adviser? It’s the Singapore-based VC that has invested in crayon.

 

According to Srikant Sastri, the co-founder of Crayon Data, the company feels to be honored and is excited. In fact, meeting Ratan Tata was interesting and it was an achievement to share the company’s vision. This three-year old company was established in 2012 by IIM Calcutta graduates Sastri and Suresh Shankar. It raised around 10 million dollar as funding from Singapore-based Jungle Ventures and Spring Seeds. The company’s strength includes 100 employees within offices set up across Dubai, New York, Chennai, London and Singapore.

 

For almost decades to come, companies running on traditional module like banking and tourism sector have been residing on the landmines of data, however they didn’t reap benefits from such a large amount of data. Crayon claims to have an engine that will not only put this data publically, but also allow enterprises of different types to personalize the offers they are going to give to their perspective audiences. And what’s more? Companies in digital space are also using their products. Its product is developing a “consumer taste fabric” that plans out choices in more than 15 categories with the help of machine and complex algorithms. This taste fabric is then allocated to huge internal (enterprise) and external (online) data sets to offer a set of customizable choices to its respective customers.

 

Tata has become a dominant investor in startups after take a leave from the active role in the Tata Group. There are a lineup of companies in which Tata has invested his money such as- Paytm, Ola, Cardekho, lingerie etailer Zivame, healthcare platform Lybrate and Kaaryah women’s clothing brand. Apart from Jungle, Tata also plays the role of an adviser with Kalaari Capital along with IDG Ventures. He has invested money in about a dozen of Kalaari’s portfolio enterprises including UrbanLadder, Snapdeal, YourStory, Holachef and Bluestone.
